EFFO delegation in Rwanda: First planning meetings for the construction of a special isolation unit

October 2019: Workshop on HCID in Berlin (RKI)

First associations of the participants on HCID were visualized in a word cloud © RKIFrom 14-18 October 2019, the EFFO project organised a workshop on "High Consequence Infectious Diseases" (HCID). The aim was to connect different actors from the project country Burkina Faso.

EFFO Activities in Rwanda

EFFO Activities in Rwanda © RKITo train staff from hospitals and health posts in dealing with suspected Ebola fever cases, two simulation exercises in hospitals (August 2018 and February 2019) and a refresher course for the first trainer cohort (June 2019) were carried out.

Effo Manual © RKIEFFO trainers can access diverse teaching materials as well as didactically prepared documents for download on www.effo.rki.de. The concept for organizing the trainings is available in French, English and German.

Workshop on plague in Ouagadougou

The focus of the workshop in November 2017 was the development and adaptation of training materials for plague. Present EFFO trainers as well as potential new trainers from numerous institutions in Burkina Faso attended the workshop. This allowed the EFFO network to be maintained and further expanded.

Operndorf Afrika

Opera Village © RKIEFFO works together with the Operndorf Afrika (Opera Village) in Burkina Faso. The aim is to further integrate methods used in theatre pedagogy in the training of trainers. The EFFO team and the team of the Operndorf piloted the cooperation during a fact finding mission in June 2017.

EFFO refresher course in Berlin

Effo refresher course in Berlin © RKIA refresher course for ten trainers of the EFFO project took place at the Robert Koch Institute in November 2016. Main contents focused on practical exercises and discussions regarding personal protective equipment. The participants were specifically sensitized to respiratory protection.

EFFO at congresses © RKITransparency plays an important role in the EFFO project. We want to share experiences: What do we teach? Which methods are used? What were the difficulties and how can EFFO contribute to the mitigation of an acute outbreak?

Simulation exercises

Simulation exercises © RKIPracticing, evaluating and practicing again are crucial steps in the preparation for biological threats in hospitals. EFFO challenges health care workers with simulation exercises. Contact tracing, use of personal protective equipment, internal as well as external communication should be discussed in team work and have to be trained continuously.

Culture of error management and incertitude

Dealing with uncertainty and with errors is prioritized in the EFFO project and is discussed explicitly during trainings. A first workshop on this topic was conducted together with nurses of STAKOB in Hamburg in March 2017.

Personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment plays an important role in an emergency situation. During the Ebola epidemic in West Africa 2013-2016, different protection concepts were used. The EFFO project uses a concept of personal protective equipment which is adapted from Médecins sans Frontières/ Doctors without Borders. Strengths and weaknesses are discussed; there might be better alternatives in the future though
