SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics

Support and trainings

Specialists from the RKI laboratory carried out a PCR training for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics at the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) in Kigali in February 2020. In addition, diagnostic kits were provided to the RBC.

The RKI team performed tests of the PCR assay in the laboratory of RBC to ensure that the protocol worked optimally on site. After the tests were successfully completed, a two-day PCR training course was held for the laboratory staff members. This was designed to support the RBC in its efforts to increase sample processing capacity.

The training consisted of a theoretical introduction followed by a practical part with basic pipetting exercises, performing an actual SARS-CoV-2 PCR, analysis of PCR results and trouble shooting.

The participants were highly motivated and interested throughout the training, and further training sessions have already been requested by the RBC. The established PCR assay enables the RBC to be the first laboratory in Rwanda to offer a diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2. The procurement and delivery of the material was coordinated in cooperation with the Institute of Tropical Medicine and International Health (ITMIH) of the Charité University Hospital.
