A First-Hand Account of the Marburg Disease Outbreak in Rwanda

Jean Pierre Sibomana, a senior critical care physician from Rwanda, recounts in The New England Journal of Medicine how he identified and managed what appeared to be the first cases of the Marburg Disease (MARD) outbreak in Rwanda in September 2024. From his diagnostic journey to the hospital’s swift response to the severity of the disease and its infection risks, Sibomana offers invaluable insights into handling such a critical situation.

What set Sibomana apart in this crisis was his preparedness for viral hemorrhagic fevers—a skill he credits to the EFFO training he attended during the Ebola outbreak of 2018/2019.
