Communication plan

Instructions

Method: group work
Duration: about 60 min
Objective: to learn about procedures and responsibilities in a case of Ebola virus disease (EVD)
Group: small groups with 3 to 5 people
Equipment: national plan (participants should have a copy in their folder); flip-chart; felt-tip pens; if desired: coloured cards and adhesive tape

Contents and plan

The participants split into 4 groups.
They may form the groups according to their area of hospital work (emergency room, ward, surgery room etc.).

In their groups, the participants discuss the responsibilities and procedures at their healthcare facility for a (suspected) Ebola virus disease (EVD) case.
The results should be as specific as possible. They are illustrated in the form of a flowchart.
After 40 minutes, the results are presented.

To consider during group work

  • At my healthcare facility, where are the virus entry points?
  • What are the national directives for a suspected EVD case? What is the case definition applied?
  • Who should I call at my healthcare facility if I suspect a case of EVD? Telephone number?
  • How can I alert the rapid response team? Telephone number?
  • Who is responsible for setting up the isolation zone/ storing Personal protective equipment (PPE) / taking charge of the patient/ decontamination? Telephone numbers?

Reflection

At the end of the Module 2 presentation, the participants were asked to reflect on preparing for EVD outbreaks at their healthcare facility. They should use these ideas during this exercise and transform them into specific guidelines.
