Instructions
Method: practical exercise
Duration: about 2 hours
Objective: practise donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), practise communicating with a patient while wearing PPE
Group: in pairs
Equipment: see separate checklist for the practical exercise; a sufficient quantity of drinking water (about 2 litres per participant)
Contents and plan
Before beginning the exercise, the trainers prepare the “isolation site”. Allow enough space for several people to get dressed at the same time and two decontamination sites for removing the PPE.
To begin with, the trainer shows the organization of the isolation area and explains how the exercise will take place. Participants pair off and decide who will play which role (clean/dirty person).

Two participants (preferably unable to wear the "full PPE") are designated to man the decontamination station.
In pairs, the participants carry out the following steps:

- Proceeding from the green zone to the red zone
- Short conversation with a patient, played by a trainer
- Proceeding to the yellow zone (decontamination)
- Doffing the PPE following the guidelines from the doffing instructor, supervised by a trainer
- Proceeding to the green zone
After the exercise, everyone sits in a circle for debriefing. Each participant and each trainer gives a brief impression of their experience, beginning by saying “The most important thing for me was…”...
