EFFO Project History in Rwanda
The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2018 caused 3481 individuals to become ill and 2299 deaths. This outbreak in a neighboring country, raised emergency preparedness in Rwanda.
There have been several other recorded EVD outbreaks in the DRC between 2016 and 2022. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined the epidemic spreading risk beyond the country’s borders as high. This prompted preparations for possible EVD outbreaks in Rwanda to be intensified.
We started preparations in June 2018, at the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) in Rwanda, where the EFFO initiated training sessions on EVD Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) management for hospital staff. Since then, a partnership between the EFFO project and the Rwanda Biomedical Center - RBC (the National Public Health Institute of Rwanda) has also been established.
We have continued expanding our activities in Rwanda through several projects within the EFFO program. Check them out here.
