SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics

Support and training courses

The RKI team performed tests on the PCR assay in the RBC laboratory to ensure that the protocol worked optimally on-site. After the tests were successfully completed, a two-day PCR training course was held for laboratory staff members. This was designed to support the RBC in its efforts to increase the sample processing capacity.

The training consisted of a theoretical introduction followed by a practical part with basic pipetting exercises, performing an actual SARS-CoV-2 PCR, analysis of PCR results and trouble shooting.

Participants were highly motivated and interested throughout the training, and further training sessions have already been requested by the RBC. The established PCR assay enables the RBC to be the first laboratory in Rwanda to offer a diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2. The procurement and delivery of the material was coordinated in cooperation with the Institute of International Health of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
