Units for temporary isolation (UFTIs)

Since 2019, the focus has also been on improving and expanding the infrastructure capacity for isolating HCID patients in Rwanda. These activities were classified as critical infrastructure in the context of COVID-19 by the Rwandan health authorities.

Two new isolation wards, each with four patient rooms and the associated additional infrastructure, were planned and constructed at the Kanombe Military Hospital / Kigali and Kibirizi District Hospital sites. Although these UFTIs were initially conceptualized for the temporary isolation of HCID patients, they were later adapted to accommodate confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The construction of both UFTIs was completed in June 2020. In light of the far-reaching measures taken by the Rwandan government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic including a temporary curfew, construction of the UFTIs could only be implemented by classifying the project as essential and critical for combating the health crisis at that time.

In response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, which had been ongoing since 2018, further project activities have been launched in cooperation with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) within the framework of the EFFO project. Besides training courses for health care workers, these activities also cover additional aspects of infection prevention and control.
