EFFO - Health Care Facilities for Rwanda (2019-2020)

The EFFO-HCFs (Health Care Facilities) project was designed to provide acute support for health care facilities in high-risk districts of Rwanda. The focus was on process-related and structural-functional hygiene management. Two units for temporary isolation (UFTI) were constructed within the project.
Hygiene management is very important during Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreaks, in order to protect patients and clinic staff against infection by adequate isolation and room management (high- / medium- / low-risk area).

The HCF project was an emergency aid measure initiated with a fact-finding mission in August 2019. One of the main activities was the improvement and expansion of the infrastructure capacity for isolating HCID patients in Rwanda.
By June 2020, Units For Temporary Isolation (UFTIs) were completed at two hospitals in high-risk districts.
The EFFO-HCF project was implemented in collaboration with the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), and in cooperation with the Technical University Braunschweig and the Institute of International Health of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
These activities were classified as critical infrastructure in the context of COVID-19 by the Rwandan health authorities.
